Praying mantis... bizarre, beautiful, deadly. The photos on this page are of the Carolina Mantis*, which usually has a blotched gray or dull brown body. All specimens I have found of the Carolina Mantis have been around five (5) inches long. Because of their color, they are easiest to spot when on green plants.

*I may have mislabeled this mantis. See comments below.

The females should be more like 6 cm long. And green is more common here (North Carolina).

Thanks for the input.

After your post, I did a brief search and found that the Carolina mantis should not be any more than 2.5 inches. So I have been misjudging size, misidentifying this mantis, or there is a variation in my region.

Most of the mantises that I've thought to be the Carolina mantis have been langer that 2.5"... so I am going to look into it.
