While tromping through the woods with my son, we came across an old tree that was breaking apart in a fascinating manner. The wood was breaking up in rectangular chunks... and it reminded me more of geological patterns than biological decay.

The decaying tree made a perfect home for moss, which flourished here even in the cold of February.
